The Lord’s Supper

(Read the previous devotion here.)

1 Corinthians 11:23-26

“For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”

1 Corinthians 11:26

I hate needles. Not so much the pain. I mean, I have multiple tattoos and have sat for hours willingly allowing someone to drive a needle repeatedly into my body. I think maybe it’s the anticipation of the pain… Or maybe it’s the blood. Yes, it must be the blood.

And yet, the passage above (as well as the accompanying Exodus reading) speaks of all these things. Suffering. Pain. A body broken. Blood shed. For us. For you.

We don’t deserve it. Yet, in remembering the One whose body was broken, whose blood was shed, we are reminded of a covenant that will never be broken. Each time we hear these words and approach the table, we can be assured and reassured…confident that He took on the pain of sin and death for our sakes.

May communion be met with anticipation of the One whose blood set us free, and may we proclaim the Lord’s death (and resurrection) each and every day of our lives.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, we receive You. We remember You. We proclaim Your goodness. You have blessed us immeasurably through Your sacrifice and love. Thank You for Your presence and constant reminder of Your grace. Amen.
